Our speaker will be John Hopwood – The History of the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower was built in 1889 as the centrepiece of the Exposition Universelle which was intended as a celebration of the French Revolution.

It was, for forty-one years, the tallest construction in the world until it was overtaken by the New York Chrysler building in 1930.

It is 324 metres or 1,063 feet tall and weighs 10,100 tonnes.

It was built by Gustave Eiffel and his Compagnie des Établissements Eiffel and that company is still very active having completed such projects as the Louvre Pyramid in 1989, the Normandy Bridge in 1995 and the fabulous Millau Bridge in 2002.

The tower went on to enjoy a chequered history through two world wars and in the intervening years. More than seven million visitors are attracted every year making it one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
