Angela’s talk brightens up a dull day

There’s nothing better to brighten up a dull, wet morning than a talk by our very own U3A member Angela Chantry.

So it was no surprise that, despite the rain, there was a good turnout at the Javea Players’ Studio for the October History Group meeting.

And Angela did not fail to impress with a fascinating presentation on ‘Lord Byron (1788-1824): The most flamboyant and notorious of the English romantic poets’.

Her talk concentrate, not so much on the poetry, as the inside story and some of the lesser-known secrets of the man himself – described by Lady Caroline Lamb as “Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know”.

In fact, Angela’s research revealed that, apart from his reputation as a sex symbol and philanderer, the poet Byron was also an accomplished sportsman and respected politician.

Despite his somewhat short life – he died aged 36 – Byron’s works are true masterpieces and will live on forever.

History Group leader Ally O’Brien congratulated Angela for her excellent talk and presented her with a bottle of wine as a thank-you.

The next History Group meeting at the JP Theatre on Tuesday November 8 will feature a presentation by Ally entitled ‘Shackleton, Hero or Not?’. It will include an original film from the Endurance of the journey and the amazing rescue trip.
