Ukrainian situation in a broader context

During the last few months, mainstream media of the Western world was deeply focused on Russia building up its troops on the border with Ukraine.

The main West view is that Russia IS an aggressor, creating in Europe the highest tension since the end of the Cold War and bringing Europe close to the brink of a new war.  The US and UK press is full of warnings about imminent intervention to Ukraine, including a precise date of a launching offensive attack by Russian troops and the indications of huge sanctions when it happens. The Ukrainian Government has denied that Russia will attack, but EU leaders were very concerned and fully engaged in diplomatic activities.

It is not so easy to find an analysis of Russian motives and their point of view of the situation.

What does Putin’s government want to achieve? Does the Russian Government have reasons to complain that the West ignores their security concerns? What history is behind the current situation with Ukraine and NATO?

What replies to Russia give the US and NATO administrations regarding Russia’s security concerns and Putin’s Government statements about  NATO  changing the balance of power between Europe and Russia?

Let’s discuss it.
