Would you like to know more about the Scream?

The Scream by Edvard Munch

The Scream is one of the most famous paintings in the world. It was created by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1893. In 2012, it sold at Sothebys in New York for almost $120m, a record price at that time.

Edvard Munch was one of the so called Proto-Expressionists, artists who began to develop a style of painting (and poetry) which sought to present the world not in a photo-realistic way but with bold colours, sweeping lines and a distorted depiction of figures and objects designed to evoke emotions and ideas in those who saw the finished artwork.

At the Talking Art Group next week, Robert Sedgley, the Group Leader will talk about 3 Proto-Expressionists, Munch, James Ensor and Käthe Kollwitz and explain how their art developed into the wider Expressionist movement in the early 1900s.

The stories behind these artists are fascinating and the art they created still influences what we see today in paint, photography and film. This is not a story of yesteryear but a celebration of modern art and those who took the first steps in it.

So, if you want to know more, Robert is speaking next week on Tuesday 28th May at 11.00 in the Jávea Players Studio, Carrer Cronista Figueras Pacheco in Jávea. Do come along, you’ll be more than welcome!
