Castellon de la Plana or simply Castellon is the capital city of the Province of Castellon, the third province in the Valencian Community. With 174,264 inhabitants (2018 Census), Castellon is the 4th largest city in the Valencian Community, after Valencia, Alicante and Elche.
There is plenty to see in Castellon. You can enjoy wandering through the old City centre with its wide shopping streets, plazas and heritage buildings.
You can visit the The Llotja del Cànem (The Hemp Exchange Market), built during the first half of the 17th century which was used by traders in hempen cloth and ropes, a very important activity in the area at the time.
Or perhaps explore the Basílica de Santa Maria, devoted to an image of the Virgin Mary discovered in 1366 by a farmer when he was ploughing his lands. The original 14th-century chapel was extended to its present Baroque form during the 16th century.
If you’re feeling energetic you can climb the 200 steps to the top of the free-standing bell-tower of the procathedral, known as El Fadrí (the single man), built in the 15th century.
Or why not wander through the Mercado Central or explore the green space of the Parque Ribalta which is only a short walk from the Plaza Mayor.
If you’re feeling “starry eyed” you could always try the Planetarium situated a short tram ride from the City Centre next to the lovely beach.
Once you’ve done all of that, you’ll need some lunch and the City Centre has a lot of great places to eat.
