Last Friday 26 members of the Getaway Guided Walking group had a very enjoyable hike in the Font Roja Park, led by our 2 excellent guides Fran and Cristian, who gave us a lot of information about the Parc and how people used to make their living in this area many years ago.

It was a hard life all year round for the local inhabitants, who had to sustain themselves by utilising local industries such as the production of charcoal from dry branches of ever- green oak, done by building charcoal kilns, and building ice-houses to compact and store the snow every winter to sell during the warmer months.

Fran spread a tablecloth in the picnic area and we had samples of a local cheese, and sweet, pipless, grapes which were covered in salt and olive oil – delicious! – and how the locals used to eat them.

After climbing to the top for the spectacular views, we finally made our way to the Restaurante Masia La Safranera, located in the Parc, for our lunch of traditional local dishes and wine.

Thank you to all the members who made it such an enjoyable day! If you would like to join the group mailing list, please send an email to Angela Chantry:
