Forty intrepid travellers braved heavy rain on a day trip to the historic town of Jumilla on Wednesday.
Despite the awful weather, the outing – organised by Spanish Culture & Cuisine Group leaders Angela Chantry and Tony Dearie – was voted a big success.
Members wearing waterproof gear and carrying umbrellas went on a walking tour of the town, visiting the 19th century theatre and a Modernist house reflecting Jumilla’s prosperous years of the late 19th and early 20th century years.
They also viewed the Church of Santiago, built in 1791 in Murcian baroque style, and visited the 16th century Town Hall.
Because of the weather, they decided not to climb up to the impressive Jumilla Castle, which was first inhabited during the Bronze Age.
Lunch in the Restaurante San Agustin was a welcome break – and a chance to sample some of the wines that Jumilla is famous for!
