Journey Through Time: U3A Explores Jávea Museum

Last Tuesday, November 4th, around a dozen members of the U3A History Group swapped their morning coffee for a trip through the centuries at the Soler Blasco Museum in Jávea.

The group was warmly welcomed by Museum Director Josep Castelló Marí, who explained that, as a municipal museum, its doors are open to everyone — a true treasure trove of local history for residents and visitors alike.

From there, the group was in the expert hands of Christine Betterton Jones, fellow U3A member and committee member of the Friends of Xàbia Museum. Christine’s passion and knowledge of Jávea’s history quickly shone through as she guided the group through thousands of years of human activity — from the Stone Age and Bronze Age, through Roman and Visigothic times, right up to the Islamic and Christian periods.

Christine brought the exhibits to life, highlighting small but fascinating artefacts that might easily be overlooked on a solo visit — each with its own story to tell. The group kept her busy with plenty of questions, and the lively discussion made time fly by.

The visit concluded on the rooftop terrace, where everyone enjoyed panoramic views over Jávea and the Montgó — the perfect setting to reflect on the town’s rich past.

Before heading off, Group Leader Keith Smith thanked Christine for a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening morning — a true journey through time, guided by an expert who clearly loves her subject.

There will be a repeat performance in December which is currently fully subscribed and with a waiting list!
