Gewürztraminer, Xarel-lo, Bobal,Tempranillo, Keith and Trevor – WAGS TOO strikes again!

Trevor Rush

For the uninitiated, the first 4 names are all grape varieties and the last 2 the Group Leader of WAGS TOO, Trevor Rush and this month’s intrepid presenter, Keith Smith.

Keith Smith

Keith took us on a journey around some less well known grape varieties.

Gewürztraminer is more commonly associated with Alsace in France but here was combined with Chardonnay to produce a refreshing white wine from Somontano near Huesca called Monasterio del Pueyo.

Next, Keith promised us Xarel-lo, the most common grape used to produce Cava. Sadly, we were denied bubbles but instead we got a really refreshing, bright white wine from Penedes called Xic (Chic in Catalan). Much loved by the bright young things of Barcelona, it got a good reception from the “ahem” slightly older folk of Jávea. The

Next up was Bobal. Used in the past to bulk up cheap red wines, Bobal has more recently become a grape which, in Utiel-Requena, has produced really interesting single grape wines. Here it was Bobal de San Juan, a really luscious red wine.

Fourth up was our Table’s favourite. A Tempranillo from Rioja called Vallobera. Traditional? Yes. Delicious? Of course. Combined with the tapas served by K Ricco Restaurant, everyone was very happy.

Finally, another Tempranillo from Rioja called Malarina 7 accompanied by a portion of a delicious cottage pie and we were all full and happy!

Trevor thanked Keith for his well researched and entertaining presentation and Keith received a well earned round of applause.
