Kasparov v Karpov 1985 – White to play and win


Can you see the winning move? This is a famous game from the 1985 World Championship between Gary Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov, two of the best chess players who have ever lived.

Karpov (Black) has just played 22……Rcd8 but has missed Kasparov’s devastating reply (Solution below).

Solution: Kasparov now wins by sacrificing his queen with 23. Qxd7. Now the game finished 23…..Rxd7 24. Re8+ Kh7 25. Be4+ and Karpov resigned as there is no way to stop checkmate
