History Talk – Famous UK forests
by Alan Hunton
Fascinating history of the famous UK forests, from towering oaks to fairy tale, bluebell woods. We will see how Britain was transformed once the ice sheets had disappeared 16,000 years ago. As the climate warmed the Oak and many other species moved north from Southern Spain and Portugal, but each species moved at a different pace so the landscape evolved gradually.
When the English Channel formed, Britain was cut off from a natural supply of tree species, but the Romans introduced many more. We will also see the impact that mankind has had on our treescapes as we moved towards the industrial revolution and modern times.
