General Meeting and Speaker
Arrive from 10.30am onwards be seated by 11am for reports from the Committee followed by a presentation by Peter Atkinson titled ‘Banksy’
Banksy, a man who likes to maintain his anonymity, is a street artist, studio artist, social
commentator, activist, philanthropist, and movie director. In recent years he has been
voted Britain’s all-time favourite artist, and his Girl with Balloon has been voted the nation’s
favourite British artwork. In the 90s, his street art was simply ‘criminal damage’. Today,
round-the-clock protection is given to new work until the relevant stretch of wall can be cut
out and moved to a secure location. The presentation will explore two questions. What do
we know about this reclusive artist? How did he evolve from a vandal to a superstar
commanding high-end prices? Along the way, we shall look at much of his work, in Britain,
the US, France and Palestine; whatever you think of it, the story is an interesting and
entertaining one.
