Democracy – what is it?

Democracy – what is it?

We will have the next Discussion group meeting on the last Friday of the month, the 23rd of February.

In our last discussion meeting, we talked about elections in the world this year, sharing opinions and forecasts about elections in Europe, the UK and the USA and their impact on our lives. Quite naturally, the term democracy was mentioned quite a few times. Therefore our next meeting will focus on the subject and definitions of democracy, the most popular voting system used in Europe, the UK and the USA.

We often hear the term democracy, but do we know the principles and systems which govern the countries of the Western world? Often we read and talk about diminishing trust in governments, media, politicians and politics. What can be done to improve the situation? Do voters have any power to remove politicians they elected but do not trust anymore?

We will discuss direct and representative democracies, referendums and deliberations as more democratic forms. We will talk about what are liberal and illiberal democracies and focus on countries which have these features. You may be surprised how much you can find out about democracy and its transformation in XXI century.
