Day Trip to Algemesi Fiesta
Algemesi, a small town about an hour’s journey north of Javea, holds a traditional fiesta on 7th & 8th September each year.
In this fiesta up to 1,400 town folk take part. There are four main groups involved, the most famous are the muixeranga & the “new” muixeranga group. These are the people who make the human towers, where they climb on the shoulders of other participants to build these amazing towers. Locals say that it was from Algemesi that the ideas were passed to Barcelona. Other groups perform stylised mock battles whilst another group performs a “Morris” type of routine.
There are two parades on the 8th. We will be going to the first which starts at about 10.15, with a spectacular entrance into the Town Square at about 12.15. Prior to this the participants weave through the streets performing dances, traditional music and parading the Giant Figures.
The day fiesta lasts until about 16.00 (the second parade starts at about 19.00 and lasts for 7 hours)
