Architecture and Public Art in the Valencian Community by Peter Atkinson
I shall take you on a tour of the Comunidad Valenciana, a region made up of three provinces: Valencia, Alicante and Castellón. We’ll visit the three provincial capitals, and we’ll explore a range of other towns and villages across the region, from Benicarló to Benigembla, and Carrícola to Orihuela. There will be some emphasis on our own Marina Alta, which includes the area around Dénia, Jávea and Moraira, and inland from there.
Illustrated by my own collection of photographs, we’ll look at some of the more interesting and attractive buildings, and at the art that greets the visitor in public places. Among others, the featured artists include Toni Marí from Jávea, a prolific and innovative sculptor in iron; Tardor Roselló, a brilliant young muralist from La Xara; the eccentric Juan Ripollés; the versatile Basque, Victor Goikoetxea; Ángel Caballero, better known as Xolaka; and bronze worker Mariano Benlliure.
The U3A Jávea General Meeting is on 24th April at the Casa de Cultura at 10.30am
