The Treachery of Anthony Blunt, presented by Gary Johnson.

Tuesday 14th October, talk starts at 11.am for one hour, doors open 10.30 am and entry is free for Javea U3A members!

Anthony Blunt was a prominent British art historian and a member of the “Cambridge Five” spy ring who secretly worked for the Soviet Union from the 1930s to the early 1950s, serving in MI5 during World War II. After confessing his activities in 1964 in exchange for immunity, his identity as a Soviet agent was revealed to the public by Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in 1979, stripping him of his knighthood. He was known for his art expertise, particularly with 17th-century painting, and his royal position as Surveyor of the Queen´s pictures.

The treachery of Anthony Blunt. How did he spy for the Soviet Union and hide in plain sight for so many years?

Anthony Blunt was arguably one of Britain’s most treacherous spies who caused misery and death. In this talk Gary will convince us that he was able to hide in plain sight because he was clever, articulate, devious and the British establishment were involved in a massive cover up. You will learn that his treachery was successfully hidden by:

·      The Cambridge University spy ring he recruited

·      His senior role in MI5

·      Connections to the British Royal Family

·      His considerable influence over politicians & the establishment

This is a powerful story of sex, spies, lies and intrigue that you shouldn’t miss. And Gary is one of our best and most experienced presenters.

It’s our first talk since our return to Casa Cultura and ENTRY IS FREE!

It is open to anyone from Javea U3A not just History Group so come along for an informative and interesting presentation!
