International Day of the Elderly 1 Oct: We are Elderly – We are Valued

Wednesday 1 October was International Day of the Elderly. Javea Social Services celebrated the day as “Somos Mayores – Somos Valiosos” (We are Elderly – We are Valued).

The event, organised as usual by Radar Seniors (the Active Ageing Project of Social Services) was held in the Pensioners Bar in the Pueblo, and opened by the Alcaldesa (Lady Mayoress) Señora Rosa Cardona. Radars had issued a special invitation to the U3A to participate, in an ongoing effort to build stronger ties between us, including learning more about the services provided locally.

The event was well attended, by both locals and U3A members. After very brief speeches, we had a fun hour of Line Dancing (getting exercise without doing exercise!) which our members joined enthusiastically – Spanish Language Not Required to Dance!

See their efforts here on YouTube https://youtu.be/kD8ghabPTDE – you might recognise some familiar faces!

Afterwards we were treated to free tapas and refreshments, while the music played on. Suddenly many of us realised that we knew many more locals AND much more Spanish, that we realised!

Watch this space for further notice of doing this together more often.
