Next May, the Travel Group are running a fantastic 5 day trip to the city of Cordoba in Andalusia. The centre piece of the trip is the annual “Festival of the Patios” in Cordoba.
Andalusian patios are central open spaces in the courtyard houses of the south of Spain. The stone patios are an architectural evolution of the Roman Atrium.
There are countless examples throughout Andalusia, notably in the historical quarter of Cordoba where “The Fiesta of the Patios” is celebrated. These patio houses are communal, family or multifamily dwellings or sets of individual houses with the shared patio. A typical patio boasts an abundant array of flowers and plants, and during the fiesta the inhabitants will share food and wine, and freely welcome all visitors to admire their beauty and the skill involved in their creation. The patios also host traditional singing, flamenco guitar playing and dancing.
Here are just a few examples of Cordoban patios, beautifully illustrating Andalusian architecture and the glorious flowers which adorn them during the Festival (Double click to expand the photographs).
As well the patios, Cordoba is also renowned for its array of fantastic buildings including 2 World Heritage sites: The Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba and the Medina Azahara.
This trip is a wonderful opportunity to see Cordoba at its best. We will have a guided tour of the best patios in Cordoba as well as visits to the Mezquita and Medina Azahara. There will be lots of free time to explore Cordoba as well as organised tours of typical Andalusian villages.
