Book Club Review – The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger

Review by Karin Ruddle

Tony Lawton introduced this book as one that he has read time and again.

Some members of the group devoured it and looked forward to reading it again. Others were more reticent, finding the writing tedious and the subject matter tiresome. The story revolves around Holden Caulfield, a 17 year old boarding school New Yorker who narrates a period of time just prior to the end of school term leading up to Christmas. He is a privileged, angry young man who tells a good story and all.

I don’t want to spoil it for those of you who would like to read it so won’t expand on the content but, needless to say (it is up there with The Great Gatsby and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as one of America’s greatest novels), it’s an interesting pick-up.

A “Catcher in the Rye” is apparently someone who saves children who would otherwise fall off a cliff.    A metaphor for one entering adulthood.  Enjoy!
