Is the decline of the West inevitable?

The next Discussion Group meeting will be held on Friday, October 25th, between 4 pm and 6 pm in the meeting room on the 1st floor of the Social Centre, Plaza Constitution, Javea.

Since the dawn of the Age of Discovery in the Fifteenth Century, further accelerated by the Industrial Revolution, the pre-eminent global powers have all been based in the Western Hemisphere, with the baton of leadership passing from Spain to the UK to the United States.

But this may all be about to change. Most observers predict that China will overtake the US as the leading global economic power at some point during this century, and India and the other BRICS countries also have large and fast-growing economies. We probably can expect a similar shift in relative military power, although on a longer timetable.

How is this likely to affect us, and what role might Europe play in the process? How might our relationships with the rest of the world have to evolve?

Are you interested in hearing opinions or telling us what you think and why? Let’s discuss it together.
