Discussion Group – Is there an excessive tourism problem in Spain?

The first Discussion Group meeting after the summer break will be on the 4th of October – the first Friday of October 2024.

The next meeting will be held as usual on the last Friday of the month so we will have two meetings in October. The second one will be organized on the 25th of October.

The discussion topic for this Friday is actually for all of us living in the area of Marina Alta.

We are seeing more and more anti-tourist demonstrations in various areas of Spain.

In the Marina Alta region, the anti-tourist supporters are represented by the Garrot group who say local people are losing their quality of life by ‘leaps and bounds’ because of tourism.

They claim that Housing prices have skyrocketed with neighbours unable to buy or rent a property as the environment degrades and infrastructures are degraded to the extent that areas are left without drinking water.

Are they right?

What about the businesses that rely on tourism and those working for those businesses? They would not have a job without tourism.

We will discuss all aspects of this issue and see what we believe could or should be done.

The meeting will take place at the Centro Social Bar in Jávea Old Town between 4pm and 6pm and all members are welcome.
