Getaway Guided Walk: Ruta de la Nevera y les Basses de la Drova
Saturday 16th January 2027
The route through the Drova Valley, in the municipality of Barx, is a scenic journey through one of the most historic corners of the Safor region. The trail connects the village of La Drova with the historic Port de la Drova and Barx and offers great views of the Mondúver Massif. For centuries, this valley was a strategic crossing point for shepherds traveling between Gandía and the interior, and it still retains that air of tranquility which, according to legend, led the monks of the Monastery of La Valldigna to use it as a place of rest and healing back in the 14th century. The landscape is dotted with caves and natural chasms, typical of the limestone terrain.

- Distance: 8 km (approx. 5 miles).
- Duration: 2.5 hours approximately.
- Elevation Gain: Low (around 155 metres).

We will head down Camí de la Nevera to the Nevera de Barx – the massive 18th-century stone snowfield house which is right on the edge of the village. Then follow the wide dirt paths out into the valley to find a quiet fountain, Font de la Benita. We continue walking and go past the old stone washhouse, Font de la Drova. As you near the La Drova side, you can see remnants of stone-lined aqueducts and irrigation channels built centuries ago by the monks of the nearby Monastery of Valldigna to route fresh spring water to their agricultural fields. The historic infrastructure built by the monks consists primarily of Les Basses de la Drova (the large water reservoirs) and the Nevera de Barx (the snowhouse), both of which have been beautifully restored. We continue to follow the flat rural lanes back towards Barx and our restaurant for lunch.
