Laurence Stephen Lowry (1887-1976) is the most popular British artist of the 20th Century. He is
known principally for his often-bleak portrayals of the people and townscapes of the Greater
Manchester area in the 1930s, 40s and 50s, observed while he was doing his day-job as a rent
collector.
The presentation will outline his interesting, strange and unusual life story and will include
a broad cross-section of his work, rural scenes as well as the urban and industrial ones, and some
shocking surprises that came to light after his death. He continues to be a prominent part of the art
world; just 12 months ago, a new record was set for a Lowry at auction – £7.8 million.
