The Wednesday WAG Group – October 2026 meeting report

Sunshine, Spain and Four Fine Wines

After several days of torrential rain and flooding across Jávea, the weather relented in time for us. Wednesday arrived bright and sunny, and the mood at L’Escut matched it. It was our best-attended meeting of the year, and we were delighted to see several new faces joining us for the first time. We hope to see them all again.

The Wines

Peter Allin presented, ably supported by Lorraine, and took us on a four-wine tour of Spain. All four were very well received.

Protos Verdejo (white, Rueda): a fresh, crisp Verdejo from the grape’s home region, and a bright start to the afternoon.

Baltasar Garnacha (rosado, Calatayud, Zaragoza): a fruity Garnacha rosé from the high vineyards of Aragón, and very much in keeping with the sunshine outside.

Barahonda Barrica Monastrell/Syrah (red, Yecla, Murcia): a warm, oak-aged blend from the south-east, with plenty of ripe dark fruit.

La Planta Tempranillo (red, Ribera del Duero, Valladolid): a smooth, approachable Tempranillo from one of Spain’s most celebrated red-wine regions, and a fitting finale.

Birthdays, Raffle & Food

October gave us just one birthday, so Gladys Cummings had the room to herself: a muffin, a candle and a hearty round of Happy Birthday.

Four raffle bottles found new homes, and Elizabeth’s kitchen was on fine form as ever.

A warm thank you to Peter and Lorraine for a splendid selection and an excellent presentation. All in all, a great day, and thank you to everyone who made it so.

Next meeting (the last of 2026): Wednesday 18 November 2026.

Christmas lunch: Wednesday 2 December 2026, Cala Brisa.
