Winery trip beats the odds!

It was an eventful day for 47 Javea U3A members on a Travel Group trip to the Vera de Estenas winery just outside Utiel.

They were delayed by not one but two traffic accidents on the motorway on the way to the vineyard. But despite arriving over an hour late, their disappointment was short-lived thanks to the organisational abilities of group leader Amanda Jordan, who phoned ahead and ensured that everything went as planned.

The group were given a guided tour of the family-run business, set up by our guide Eduardo’s grandfather in 1981. It begun with a visit to the fields where the grapevines grow on 42 acres and are meticulously pruned and harvested every year. Then inside the winery Eduardo explained the wine-making process before the party visited the barrels room and the caves where the best vintages are kept.

The visit concluded with the highlight of the tour for most U3A members – a much-anticipated wine tasting, with two white wines, a rosado and a red accompanying a slap-up meal in the sunshine in the gardens of the old house.

Not surprisingly, the journey home was quiet ….. and fortunately uneventful!
