Claimed to be one of the most thunderous and magical in the whole of Spain!
The “Spring Festivities” are the most important festive celebrations in the city of Murcia, taking place following the religious holiday of Holy Week and lasting for 7 days, Saturday 11th – Sunday 19th April 2020. Our visit will include three of the major events: the “Battle of the Flowers”, the “Arrival of the Sardine” and the traditional “Burial of the Sardine” which consists of a mixed carnival and mythological parade at the end of which a sculpture that represents a large sardine is burned. The burning of the sardine occurs next to the Old Bridge and then a large display of fireworks ends the Spring Festival.
This show claims to be one of the most thunderous and magical in the whole country and is thought to date back to 1850 when students in Murcia were so tired of eating sardines during Lent that they decided to have a procession and celebrate the burial of the sardine. The fiesta has grown exponentially and is a blaze of colour, madness, fun and craziness.
We will travel to Murcia by coach and our visit will include 3 nights bed and breakfast in a 4* hotel within walking distance of the centre, sightseeing in Murcia, with plenty of free time to watch the festivities.
Full details will be published soon. Angela & Tony, group leaders, Spanish Culture and Cuisine.
