Monthly meeting Wed 27 February 2019

You are invited to the Monthly General Meeting of the Javea U3A at the Parador Hotel in the Arenal on Wednesday February 27. Doors open at 9.30am and the business part of the meeting will begin at 11am and will last approximately an hour.

Our guest speaker is Ray Wilcox, a former prison officer and governor, who will be talking about the Prison Service and the problems it is currently experiencing – a presentation not to be missed!

Importantly, you can still renew your membership for 2019. Please bring along your current membership card. The subscription fee for the year is €10. Renewal desks will be open from 9.30am until 10.30am. Please note, if you don’t renew by the end of February you will have to rejoin and pay the joining fee!

Another attraction not to be missed is a slideshow of photos of members enjoying a variety of activities over the last couple of months. This will be showing on the big screen in the main hall in the run-up to the start of the meeting.

Guest speaker

Our speaker this month is former prison governor Ray Wilcox, who will be giving a talk on the Prison Service between 1975 and 2005 and the troubles it is currently experiencing.

Ray retired from HM Prison Service in 2005, after a 30-year career as both a uniformed officer and prison governor.

He worked in a number of prison establishments including Prison Service Headquarters in London and North East Area Office in Newcastle as well as prisons including Pentonville and Parkhurst.

Ray and his wife Margaret moved to Spain in 2005 and now live in La Xara. Since retiring, he has written two novels, Lock-Down Blues published in 2014 and Unlock These Hands published in 2018.
