Latest message from the President

President Val Dromgoole

Where are the months going?  We are now at the beginning of May and my garden is looking at its best.  My roses are blooming, my irises are starting to flower in all their glorious colours.  My washing is hanging on the line and I am keeping an eye on that cloud!

At the April monthly Executive Committee Meeting we introduced Krystyna Stefanczyk (pronounced Kris Rummikubs) as Deputy Groups Coordinator. Krystyna has served on the committee before, some years ago; she has also been an Events Organiser. New to the committee is Julie Robson, who will be assisting Stan Staines as Deputy Membership Secretary.  Julie (and her husband Duncan) have always been involved with things U3A so most of you will know her already.

We elected Piotr Azia to be WebMaster of the new website, with John Wilde continuing as his deputy.

This just leaves us with one deputy position to fill: Deputy Communications Officer.  We really need someone to help Ian Rogerson (the one behind the camera and who sends you all those emails). This is a fairly busy position at the moment, because of the transition between websites, but I think it would be quite interesting.  If nothing else, you will find out about the trips before anyone else!!

Our nominated charity for the year, Help of Denia and the Marina Alta, has already benefited from a generous donation of 150€ from the Dine & Dance group, led by David and Anne Watts. Thanks guys!

The May Ball is getting closer. it will be held at Carrasco on the 30th. It will be good – we have a decent band and some lovely tombola prizes.  The Remy Martin brandy has my name on it!

In October we have the Hallowe’en Party.  Tickets for that are going on sale at this next Parador meeting.

Speaking about the Parador – which is closing for a refurb ‘sometime’!.  We are seriously looking at See Montgo (which used to be Laguna Ribs) for our meetings.  This is the only place in Javea that is large enough to hold 150 people plus the various tables we require to service our members’ needs.  It is also the only one which will even contemplate having us there!!  This may mean that the November Extravaganza will take a new, slightly reduced form, but we are working on that.

We have had some sad news over the past month, but the good news is that on Sunday April 21 our dear member Betty Guiness reached 100 years of age.

Unfortunately, she recently had a fall and broke her femur and was unable to attend the April general meeting. Fortunately Betty has a lovely daughter looking after her and she is making good progress.  We will celebrate her birthday eventually, promise!

In the meantime, we are making her an Honorary Member with a special gold membership card.  Something for you all to aim for!

Stay well my dear friends,
Val xx
