Handover of charity cheque

Charity was the winner at the Javea U3A monthly meeting at the Parador in February.

Our nominated charity for 2018, Todos Juntos Javea, was presented with a cheque for €3,113, collected from various fundraising and raffles. And there was a bonus of €117 raised from the sale of Christmas cards.

The charity’s president, Carmen Alesanco and secretary Marion Kenworthy, expressed their deepest gratitude when they were handed the money by U3A president Val Dromgoole.

Our chosen charity for 2019 is Help of Denia and Marina Alta, and its representative, Catherine Perez, came along to explain to members the voluntary work it carries out in the area.

The meeting finished with an enlightening talk by former prison officer and governor, Ray Wilcox, on his career in the prison service and the problems the service is currently facing. U3A members were also able to buy copies of two novels Ray has written, based on “inside” information.

Membership of the Javea U3A, which was just over 1,400 at the end of last year, continues to strengthen with 200 new members already joining in January and February. Also, the Javea U3A Facebook page continues to grow in popularity as it is about to hit the 500 mark of members joining the group.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to such a fantastic donation to charity – let’s hope we can do as well (or even better) this year!
